Who are you and what kind of business do you have?
I am Michon van der Salm, Founder and CEO of Basement project development. We are a social development company. We re-develop and develop work and living spaces not for our own benefit but for the benefit of our users. Our slogan is, the asset is not the building itself but the asset is in the building (the users).
One of our current projects is KATSHOEK.
KATSHOEK accommodates businesses that strengthen and inspire each other. Every entrepreneur will bring something to the table when they are members of KATSHOEK: knowledge, expertise and a network. All entrepreneurs are always willing to learn and to share knowledge and resources. The entrepreneurs at KATSHOEK adopt their environment and invest in the community. Innovation, pioneering and collaboration are encouraged, because this allows everyone to grow and to create new business. Sharing knowledge is the foundation for a vibrant community and thanks to the power of the collective can rise above yourself. What unites them is hard work, fun and the love for Rotterdam.
What was your motivation to start working for yourself?
To be independent, being able to change the things I want and need to change and to give other people the opportunities to start their own company.
What’s the best thing about being an entrepreneur?
Not being an employee!
When did you know the entrepreneurial lifestyle was meant for you?
When I was 7 or 8 years old. But started when I had the experience I needed for myself.
What’s your ambition for the next 5 years?
To change the way real estate is invested in.
What’s the best advice you can give a Rookie?
When you have a good idea and your are confident to go for it, go for it. Never doubt yourself and always ask other entrepreneurs for help. Know others will understand the road your on and they definitely will give you support.
